How to Read a Harness Racing Program: Past Performances, Class Codes and Medication

Taught on an actual Plainridge chart rather than a made-up example, in the order a horseman reads it.

Start at the Top

Almost every guide to how to read a harness racing program starts with the horses. That is the wrong end. The condition line above the field decides what the race is worth and which horses were allowed in, and the field only makes sense once that line has been read. So we begin there.

A condition line carries four things: the gait, the purse, the distance and a class code. Gait is either pace or trot, and the two gaits are never mixed in one event. Purse is simply the money on offer. Distance at Plainridge was almost always a flat mile. The class code is where the real information sits.

Class codes are the racing secretary's eligibility sentence, compressed. NW200PS means non-winners of $200 per start, 3000CL a $3,000 claiming race, and FM in front restricts the field to fillies and mares alone. Class Codes: the Condition Line Comes First

Harness fields leave behind a moving gate in a single line, so the draw is not a formality. On a five-eighths-mile oval the first turn arrives inside a quarter of a mile, and a horse drawn wide must either burn energy crossing over or settle at the back. Read the PP column before any of the form.

Each post carries a standard saddle-pad colour, which is why the numbers on this site are shown as coloured chips. Red is one, blue two, white three, green four, black five, yellow six, pink seven and grey eight. The convention is old, universal across the sport and genuinely useful at any real distance from the track.

How to Read a Harness Racing Program Line by Line

The figures beside each horse are compressed harness racing past performances: the season's starts, wins, placings, best mile, earnings and declared medication. Alone they mislead, because a horse with three wins in an $1,800 class is not the better animal than one with no wins at all in a $7,500 claimer.

Best mile is the most abused figure in any set of harness racing past performances. It is the quickest time that horse recorded this season and it resets each January, so a blank means unraced rather than slow. Learning how to read a harness racing program starts with distrusting it.

Past Performances, Medication and the Last Quarter

After the race the judges publish the chart. It carries the leader's fractions at each quarter, then a line per horse showing where that horse sat at the quarter, half, three-quarters and stretch, the margin at the wire, its own individual time, its last quarter and the closing odds it went off at.

Margins use letters for fractions of a length: H for a half, Q for a quarter, T for three quarters and HD for a head. Knowing how to read a harness racing program means reading 2/6T as second by six and three-quarter lengths, with a degree mark for a horse racing outside without cover.

The last-quarter column is the one experienced readers go to first. A horse that closed its final quarter in 29 seconds in a race won in 2:01 did something the finishing position may not show, and that figure is how you separate genuine late speed from a field that simply stopped in front.

The Race Header Before Any Horse Is Listed

Every race on a card opens with a header rather than a horse, and that header sets the terms for everything below it. The gait, the distance, the purse, the class condition and the track condition are all fixed before a single entry is printed, and each one changes how the lines underneath should be read.

The distance never varies anywhere in this record: every race was contested at one mile. The purse does vary, from $1,500 to $50,000 with a median of $2,500, and that figure is the quickest available signal of where a race sat on the card relative to the rest of the programme.

Track condition is abbreviated down to two letters. 971 of the races held here were run on a fast surface, marked FT, with the remainder split between GD for good, SY for sloppy and SL for slow. A time set on anything other than FT is not comparable with one set on it.

Post Position, the Draw and the Mobile Gate

The number in the first column is the post position, the slot the horse drew for the start behind the mobile gate. It is not a preference and it is not a ranking: it is the result of a draw, and on a five-eighths-mile oval with four turns in a mile it carries real consequences.

Those consequences are measurable rather than folklore. Across the charted starts on this track the inside posts win several times as often as the outside ones do, and the advantage decays steadily the further out a horse begins, which the figures further down this page set out post by post.

A row whose post position reads SCR was scratched before the race. The horse was drawn, printed and then withdrawn, and the chart keeps its row rather than deleting it, which is why a field can look one starter short of the entry sheet with no note anywhere explaining the difference.

The Call Columns: How to Read a Trip

Between the post position and the finish sit the call columns, and they are the part of a chart that most rewards learning. Each one records where the horse was at a fixed point on the track: at the quarter, at the half, at the three-quarters and then at the head of the stretch.

3,248 horse lines in this record carry a first-call position, so the trip is usually recoverable in full. Read across, those four numbers describe a shape rather than a result: a horse that reads 8, 6, 3, 2 was closing all the way, and one that reads 1, 1, 1, 4 was caught late.

1,469 of the surviving horse lines carry a degree mark in one of those call columns, which is a great many for a five-eighths oval. Being parked out without cover is expensive, so a mark in either of the last two calls is context for a final time that looks slower than it ought to.

The call columns often carry a second figure after a slash, which is the margin in lengths at that point of the race. Together with the position it distinguishes a horse sitting a comfortable third from one lying third and already beaten eight lengths, which the position on its own will never tell you.

The Finish, the Beaten Margin and the Odds

The finish column packs two separate things into a single token. The number before the slash is the finishing position and what follows it is the beaten margin in lengths, so a line reading 1/2Q won by two and a quarter and a line reading 7/6Q was seventh, beaten six and a quarter.

The margins are worth reading for how tight the racing was. 33 per cent of the 386 winners here won by less than a full length, a further 96 lines end in DIS because the horse was beaten too far to be measured at all, and 244 distinct margin tokens appear across the record.

The odds column records what the pool finally settled at, not what the board showed earlier. Median closing odds across 3,089 starters here are 8.1 to one; the favourite is flagged separately and won 35 per cent of the races in which one is marked, at a median price near even money.

Class Codes and the Grammar Behind Them

A class code is a compressed sentence, and it parses cleanly once the parts are known. 74 of the decoded codes on this site are built on NW, for non-winners, which caps what a horse may already have won and still enter; 45 are claiming races, where any starter can be bought afterwards for a stated price.

The suffixes do the arithmetic. PS means per start, so a non-winners-of-$200-per-start race measures an average rather than a season total, and it appears in 37 of the decoded codes. PMLT counts the money in a horse's lifetime instead, which is a materially different test of the very same horse.

Prefixes restrict the field instead. FM in front of a code confines it to fillies and mares, and 32 of the decoded codes carry it. HC marks a handicap, where the draw is assigned rather than drawn at random, and OPEN marks a race with no eligibility condition at all beyond being entered.

Read together those parts explain why 258 distinct codes appear across the surviving cards. The office was not choosing from a fixed menu of divisions: it was writing a condition to fit the horses it actually had, one programme at a time, out of a small vocabulary of interchangeable parts.

The Fractions Line and the Shape of the Mile

Above the finishing order sits a line of four times, and it describes the race rather than any single horse in it. They are the leader's times at the quarter, the half, the three-quarters and then the finish, and 1,095 races in this record carry the complete set of all four of them.

Each fraction carries its own split in brackets beside it. A line reading 30.0, 1:00.4, 1:30.1, 1:58.4 tells you the quarters were run in 30.0, 30.4, 29.2 and 28.3 seconds, which is a mile that got faster as it went and therefore one where closing from behind was hard work.

The reverse shape is the more common trap for a reader. A field that goes twenty-eight and change to the quarter and then walks the last quarter in thirty-two will produce a final time that looks respectable and a race that was won by whoever happened to be nearest the front when the pace collapsed.

This is why the fractions are worth reading before the result. Two horses with identical winning times in identical classes can have run entirely different races, and the only place that difference is recorded is in those four numbers above the field and the last quarter printed beside each horse.

Medication, the Last Quarter and What a Chart Withholds

Medication is declared before the race and printed as a letter beside the horse. L for Lasix, B for Bute, LB for both Lasix and Bute declared for this start are the codes in use across this record, and the declaration is a matter of record rather than of form: it tells you what was administered, not whether it helped or how the horse was expected to run.

The last quarter is given as its own figure, separate from the winning time. It is the closing split, and it is the number that distinguishes a mile paced evenly from one where the field went hard early and then walked home, which two identical final times will otherwise hide completely.

What a chart does not carry is as important as what it does. There is no comment line, no trouble note beyond the call columns and the margins, and no record at all of what a driver intended. Everything read from this page is an inference from position, time and money, and nothing more.

Comparing Two Lines Without Fooling Yourself

A form line is only ever comparable to another line on the same terms. The class condition, the track condition and the gait all have to match before two times mean anything against each other, and on this record all three of them vary from one afternoon to the next.

Class is the first filter to apply. A win in a non-winners-of-$200-per-start race and a win in an open handicap are not the same achievement, and the purse in the header is the fastest proxy for the difference: the median race in this record carried $2,500 and the largest of them $50,000.

The surface is the second filter. 971 of these races were run on a fast track and the rest on good, sloppy or slow going, so a time set on anything other than FT reads slower than the horse actually was, and comparing across conditions without noting them is the commonest error of all.

The third filter is the trip itself. A horse that won from the pylons having led throughout and a horse that won parked out from an outside post did not do the same work at all, and the call columns are the only surviving record of which of the two you are looking at.

The Entry Sheet, the Chart and the Gap Between Them

Two different documents describe the same race, and they are printed at different moments. The entry sheet goes out before the card and states who was drawn in; the chart is written afterwards and states what actually happened. 1,445 races here hold an entry sheet and 1,990 hold a chart.

Only 1445 races hold both of them. That is the single most important limit on reading this archive: for most races you have either the field or the result, and a form line assembled across the two has to be read as two separate documents rather than as one continuous account.

The gap also explains the scratches. A horse printed on the entry sheet and then withdrawn before the start appears in the chart as a row with its position replaced by a marker, so the two documents disagree about the size of the field by design rather than by any error.

Program Questions, Answered

What is a harness racing program?

It is the official booklet or sheet for a card, listing every race with its conditions and every horse with its post position, connections, recent form and declared medication. It is the primary document a bettor or a horseman works from, and nothing printed on it is decorative or optional.

In what order should I read a race in the program?

Start with the condition line above the field, because it sets the class. Then the post positions. Then who is driving. Then each horse's recent form and its best mile of the season. Reading the horses before you read the condition is the most common newcomer mistake.

What does the condition line tell me?

Gait, purse, distance and a class code. Together they say what standard of horse was eligible. A $2,000 purse for non-winners of $200 per start is a very different race from a $7,500 claimer, even though both of them may look like perfectly ordinary races sitting side by side on the same card.

How do I read the fractions?

Fractions are the leader's times at the quarter, half and three-quarter points, with the split for each quarter in brackets. They tell you the shape of the race: fast early fractions followed by a slow last quarter means the early pace collapsed and the leaders emptied out before the wire.

What are the numbers after a finishing position, like 2/7?

The first number is the position, the second the margin in lengths behind the horse in front. Fractions of a length appear as letters: H for a half, Q for a quarter, T for three quarters and HD for a head. So 2/6T is second by six and three-quarter lengths.

What does a degree symbol next to a running position mean?

It marks a horse racing outside another, without cover. One mark means first over, two means racing third out. A horse that wins after being parked outside for a half has done considerably more work than its bare finishing position on the line would ever suggest on its own.

What is the LQ column?

Last quarter — the time that individual horse took to cover the final quarter mile. It is the single most useful column for spotting a horse that finished strongly in a slow race, because it cleanly separates genuine closing speed from a field that simply stopped in front of the closer.

What does an asterisk before the odds mean?

It marks the betting favourite. The odds themselves are the closing price rather than anything offered earlier, so an asterisked 1.40 means the horse went off at 1.40 to 1 and was the shortest price anywhere in that field on the day.

What does DIS mean in a chart?

Distanced — the horse finished so far behind that no margin was recorded. It usually accompanies an X or a similar mark somewhere in the running line, which together indicate that the horse broke stride and lost its gait somewhere during the race.

What does breaking stride mean?

A pacer or trotter must hold its gait. If it gallops, it has broken, and the driver must take it to the outside and lose ground. A break almost always ends any chance in the race, and it is the single most consequential thing that can happen to a well-backed horse.

Why does the program show a claiming price for each horse?

In a claiming race every starter can be bought at its stated price shortly after the race by any eligible owner. Prices can differ within a single field, with weight or purse allowances applied to even things out, which is exactly why the figure is printed for each horse rather than once for the race.

What is the difference between a pacer and a trotter?

The gait. A pacer moves the legs on each side together and usually wears hobbles to hold that pattern; a trotter moves diagonal pairs together. Pacing is the quicker of the two gaits, so pacers and trotters are timed and classed entirely separately and are never mixed in one event.

Does the program tell me anything about the track surface?

Yes. The chart carries a track condition code — FT for fast, GD for good, SY for sloppy — and often a temperature and allowance figure. A slow surface adds whole seconds to every mile on the card, so two times are only really comparable when they were set under the same conditions.

What is the "allowance" figure next to the temperature?

It is the time allowance the judges applied for conditions, used when comparing a mile against a record. It exists because a cold or heavy afternoon slows down the entire card, and a raw time taken on such a day badly understates the performance that actually stands behind it.

Is the program the same thing as past performances?

Not quite. A program includes a compressed form line for each horse; a full past-performance product from a data supplier gives many more lines per horse. The program is the official document for that particular card, and this archive reproduces the program itself rather than any commercial form product built on top of it.
